Is Digital Marketing a Career worth investing money, time, and energy in 2022?
If you are someone who has heard the hype and has followed the trend around digital marketing, you have come to the right place.
We are in 2022, a year that, along with its predecessor 2021, has been the years of COVID-19.
We are still in the middle of COVID-19, and despite all the damage done to all the different professions, one line of work that has survived COVID-19 is Digital marketing.
In 2020 and 2021, digital marketing got more relevant than ever as we are stuck inside our houses relying on the Internet to make the right buying decisions.
I know you are already connecting the dots.
Let me back what I wrote above with some hard facts:
- First, 2020 was the year when internet usage increased drastically. For example, the mobile network provider EE reported a 45% increase in data usage for communication services and online browsing between February and May 2020.
- By June 2020, Facebook reported that 100 million more users had joined their network. (Source – Pilotfish)
And the push to the increased budgets in digital marketing has further increased the job demand in the digital marketing industry.
LinkedIn says the “Digital Marketing Specialist” role is among the top 10 most in-demand careers. (source: Search Engine Journal).
Why Choose Digital Marketing as a Career?
Demand for the digital marketing career
The growth of a digital marketing career has been fuelled by the growing internet usage amongst the target customer base over the last few years.
From accounting and a bookkeeping business to a hospital (small or big) today, every Australian business wants to jump on the digital marketing bandwagon and find success.
The trend has led to rapid growth in digital marketing. Therefore, the next logical step for an online business is to market a business online.
To start with – it is a prerequisite for every marketing job.
Since the industry is becoming an extended arm of every company’s marketing division, there will be a surge in demand for digital marketing professionals, leading to better salaries.
As per a recent survey, four into ten marketing jobs require some digital marketing skills.
In addition, as per a survey by Mckinsey – 61% of the companies surveyed by them said reported that they plan to add a digital marketer to their team (source: Clickthrough Marketing)
Besides, most of the skills required by the industry from marketers today are the ones used in digital marketing.
Here is a graph from marketing charts to validate the same:
And it’s not just a skill set that is required in marketing.
As per the marketing hiring report published at Mckinley, digital marketing demands heavily outweigh the supply by 59% to 19%. This imbalance between demand and supply has created a massive opportunity for those willing to enter the digital marketing industry.
Digital Marketing is the Future
Over the last ten years, Digital marketing has become a synonym for marketing.
An unknown method of marketing that burst into the marketing scene because of the wide usage of the industry has become the most prominent marketing method.
Changes in Traditional Versus Digital Marketing Spent.
Consider this, while the traditional advertising budget has declined drastically, the digital marketing spend has grown in double-digit in the last eight years (refer to the graph below for details)
source – webstrategicinc
It means businesses are shifting their marketing spending, and the marketing budgets allocated to radio, television, and newspapers are now spent on digital marketing mediums.
This trend is expected to continue for the next several years as it is likely that digital ad spending will touch almost 201.83 billion dollars by 2023.
As our attention span shifts more and more from traditional mediums like newspapers, TV to Internet, Digital marketing becomes more and more relevant.
And as you can see in the above stats, digital marketing is winning hands down against the traditional methods, which in turn leads to massive vacancies in the digital marketing sector.
Digital Marketing is open to professionals from all backgrounds
Other than the usual logic of the Internet reaching masses and increasing the time people spent on the Internet (stats around avg time people spend on the Internet and growth of people on internet users in last five years), which inadvertently gave a push to digital marketing.
The most significant contributing factor to the digital marketing career growth has been its openness to accept professionals from all aspects of life.
Unlike the engineering, medical, or financial industry, digital marketing does not define you by your qualification.
All you need is a knack for understanding how the Internet works and what does it take to succeed on the web, and then, as they say, ‘the internet is your playground.’
Also, I think digital marketing is a boon for introverts like me who like to make sales hiding behind the computer screen.
The beauty of the industry lies in accepting professionals from all backgrounds.
Think about it. You like tech – you can become a technical SEO professional.
You like social media, SMM is your playground.
You like to write content. Become a content writer.
You like creativity. Become a creative content creator.
You enjoy designing, become a social media content creator.
And if you are an all-rounder, then the sky is the limit
With a digital marketing career, you get an opportunity to shine.
As I mentioned earlier, I have never seen a profession that accepts professionals from such diverse backgrounds.
With Digital Marketing - You Think outside the box
I have been an entrepreneur for 12+ years (now retired) and never have I enjoyed any line of work as much as I enjoyed digital marketing.
Some days, I was creating infographics, the others I was finding creative ways to get backlinks, and I was thinking of other creative ideas to get more traffic to my client’s websites.
Digital marketing is fast-paced and is driven by ‘creativity and ‘out-of-the-box ideas, which have to stay abreast with new social media platforms, google algorithms, and changes to the world of digital marketing.
If you like to think out of the box and want to be challenged on a day-to-day basis (and also get paid well for doing that 😊), you will love a career in digital marketing.
Digital Marketing gives you the flexibility to learn new skills
When I first started learning digital marketing, a veteran in the industry asked me, ‘What do you enjoy doing the most.’
I answered, ‘I like writing content, marketing, browsing for new stuff on social media.
And he said, ‘You are going to love digital marketing.
Digital Marketing is a career that gives you exposure to so many new skills and things on a day-to-day basis. Unlike other career options like coding or infrastructure engineering, where the learning curve for every new skill is steep, digital marketing is not rocket science.
So if you are a content writer who wants to learn SEO, you learn the SEO basics and mix them with your good content writing skills to rank your content.
A career in digital marketing is not defined by one line of work.
Instead, it is defined by your appetite to learn new skills and upgrade yourself as per the latest digital marketing trends.
